In February, I received a grant from the Pulitzer Center to travel to Chile for two weeks (and live on a boat for nine days!) to report on the environmental impacts of salmon farming. The story that came out of that trip is now live: Patagonian paradise lost? The environmental hazards of farming fish in a warming world.
It features incredible photography by Cristóbal Venegas and Alvaro Vidal, and a few pictures by yours truly as well.
I’ll keep this short, because I’d rather you read the story I spent months reporting and writing than this post I’m dashing off at 10pm at night.
Thanks in advance for reading—and for sharing, if you are so moved!
Yes! Excellent article Jess. Another good book on the topic is Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food by Paul Greenberg
That was a great read - I first read about this issue in the book Bottom Feeder and it's been gratifying to see that salmon farming on the west coast of Canada is being phased out in areas that have large natural salmon runs. I hope things improve in Chile too!
