Wow what a ton of drama over the course of a single event! I’d watch a whole movie about it for sure. I would like to know more about the supposed “chicanery” about Schwizer being able to enter the race.

Ha I should have elaborated! Ok so the best I can tell is the official rules up to that point made did not explicitly bar women from running so she registered with her initials and instead of submitting for some sort of medical exam (by the race organizers?? that's weird but anyway) she got a doctor to write a note that she was fit to run, AND she had a male friend pick up her number at registration—which I imagine would have been just fine if she was a man. So that's the extent of the "chicanery."

Wow this is quite a story. And the fact that she ended up friends with Semple and married Miller feels … somehow even more upsetting??? Yeesh

Yeah I mean the reconciliation with Semple thing...I've always been skeptical. But he was by all accounts dedicated to the race and when women were allowed in became supportive of them...so maybe it makes sense that they buried the hatchet?

But the fact she married Miller after that gives me the heebie jeebies. I HATE that I learned that..

Thank you for sharing the Boston Marathon story. I wasn’t familiar with it but as a (former) runner I’m glad I am now, it feels like an important piece of history to know.

I will have to track down a copy of the Audubon magazine for my kids. They are big bird lovers and the oldest has been inspired by Haizlett’s Tiny Worlds to start a nature journal.

Oh my god that's so wonderful to hear!! I want to pick up a copy of Tiny Worlds for myself AND for my baby niece, when she's a bit older...

Audubon mag is kinda hard to find if you're not a member BUT the Aviary is one place where the website is a teeny bit better, because the print version of the profile is a lot shorter (like, 150 words) and there's more photos in the online version. Although I also treasure the beautiful print copies, of course..

Wow. Quite a story. Weird that she married Miller. Also now the qualifying time is 2:50 I think.
