I keep thinking of the wildlife affected by the fires. So dreadfully sad and disturbing. Running for their lives if they can.

Yes, I came across some really disturbing descriptions of wildfire/wildlife (from historical fires, not this one, so I consoled myself by thinking that this particular thing happened a long time ago) in some of my reading for this post, which was too horrible to share. But ya, it's awful.

On a lighter note I saw a tiktok of a mountain lion and two cubs fleeing the palisades fire, and they looked so far unharmed…

I saw that same video. Those adorable cubs! At least the threat of being hit by motor vehicles is less than usual. I guess

Apocalyptic is a good word for it. I've been watching the coverage of fires in LA, where I grew up, from my current home where we are recovering from Hurricane Helene. The magnitude of devastation drives home that there's no escaping climate change. I do think that improved land use policies and preparedness will be key to minimizing loss of homes and of human life in future disasters.

It's all so heartbreaking. Wishing your community a speedy recovery. The total monetary damages from Hurricane Helene are (I believe) currently still higher than estimated damages from the LA fires (which makes sense when one thinks about how many people/places were affected--six states), which really underscores the magnitude of both disasters.

Thank you! The town I live in thankfully had minimal impacts but neighboring communities were hit hard. I do wish there existed a better measure of impact than dollar value, since home and land prices are so variable.

Yes, and also because at a certain point they're all just really big numbers that don't really get at the human impacts.
