Congratulations! Great memories of your mom and godparents. What a wonderful place to have in your heart and mind. Your description of the marathon start and dilemmas of what to bring and what to wear during the race ring true to me. I make my first trip to the Monterey area in mid June for a wedding. Highly recommend taking the detours up on the dunes (couple pictures from around sunset in my other post https://pinchofdirt.substack.com/p/i-may-not-have-that-dog-in-me). We only went a mile or so out and back, starting around Del Monte Beach I think, plus some side walks up the dunes, and still felt it was incredibly worth it!
Also, we drove the scenic 17 Mile Drive (there's a fee), but I was jealous of the folks with bicycles, if you can find some nearby to rent!
